Provo Auto Insurance is mandated in so far as Utah is a no fault state that requires Personal Injury Protection (PIP) for $3,000 which is intended for medical payments of injured parties regardless of who is at fault for the accident. It further requires minimum liability coverage of $25,000 per person for bodily injury, $65,000 per accident for bodily injury, and $15,000 per accident for property. Uninsured and underinsured insurance is optional as well as collision and comprehension. However, many lenders require collision if you are financing the vehicle.

Provo Auto Accident Statistics

The Utah Department of Public Safety cited 54,938 car crashes in one year with 29,000 injuries resulting from those crashes. Approximately 150 crashes are reported by the Utah Highway Patrol every day. Although some accidents are unavoidable, many are caused by irresponsible driving such as intoxication.

In July of 2005, Utah replaced the “No-Alcohol” Conditional License Law with the “Alcohol Restricted Driver Law,” which forbids a driver to have any alcohol in their system when driving. Conviction of this violation will result in the revocation of the offender’s driver’s license for one year. Although the license itself will not show this restriction, the information is readily available to law enforcement when needed.

Drivers under the age of twenty-one are automatically subjected to this status, and offenses that can lead to it are alcohol related reckless driving, an alcohol restricted driver violation, automobile homicide, driving under the influence, impaired driving, a PerSe arrest (blood alcohol content of .08 or higher), refusing to take a chemical test, or violation of an ignition interlock. Ignition interlock is referred to as BAIID (Breath Alcohol Ignition Interlock Device) which is installed in a repeat offender’s vehicle and acts as a random breathalyzer. Failure of the test will cause your car to be locked from operation and suspension or revocation terms will be reinstated and or extended.

In July of 2009, the Senate passed a bill that increased the Driving Under the Influence (DUI) suspension periods, resulting in a minimum of 120 day suspension for first time offenders to three years depending on the offense. Offenses vary depending on the age of the driver (over or under 21), if it is a first time conviction or second time, and whether the driver refuses to submit to a chemical test.

The Utah Highway Patrol has a strong focus on impaired drivers as well as an emphasis on accident investigation and reconstruction, commercial vehicle safety, community policing, criminal interdiction (the detection of serious crimes), human resource development, local law enforcement support, public service, restraint usage, and safety education.

Provo, Utah's Driving Privilege Card

Provo Auto Insurance is needed for drivers operating with a Driving Privilege Card (DPC) the same as is required for a standard driver’s license. A DPC is issued by the Utah Driver License Division to people who are not able to get a driver’s license or state identification card. A documented person who does not qualify for a social security number, but can provide proof of legal residency, or an undocumented person who obtains an Individual Tax Identification Number (ITIN) from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) can apply for a Driving Privilege Card.

In order to be eligible for the DPC, you must reside in Utah for a minimum of six months, you cannot be temporarily assigned to Utah, and you must need a DPC in order to legally drive in Utah. All of the requirements for a standard driver’s license also apply. The card cannot be used as a means of identification.

As of 9/1/09, the DPC adopted a new look with format and color changes. Although the type of data and the security features of the card remain the same, they now expire one year from issuance instead of five years from date of birth. The card will expire sooner if necessary to correspond with the expiration date of the legal presence document. All DPC cards will be replaced by September of 2010.
